Why I Chose Insurance
Rob Longyear
Prior to 2010 when I started my Longyear Family Agency insurance career, I spent my working life in corporate America. I did well and relied on healthy group life insurance policies offered through my employers. The total amount (face value) was more than sufficient to pay off a mortgage, cover college expenses and leave my wife and children comfortable without me. I also had $500,000 of insurance on my wife.
It never dawned on me that I should own a life insurance policy outright. My insurance agent never mentioned the subject to me in the 12 years I was with him and I could have easily afforded it.
In 2008, I found myself unemployed. About that time, my wife was diagnosed with leukemia and instantly became uninsurable. (Remember, I had relied on group life insurance.) When I was out of work I had nothing to protect us financially should the worst happen. In 2017, it did. After battling the disease valiantly for 8 years, she died. My two kids were in expensive universities; I had a mortgage and lost her income. While mourning her loss, I now had finances to worry about.
In 2009, I was contacted by two of the most popular and successful insurance carriers about converting my operations and sales background into a career as an Insurance Agent.
Because of my personal experience with life insurance, this felt like a “calling.” Almost like the Lord was encouraging me to help others learn from my emotional and financial challenges.
So, I began the process of acquiring my Property & Casualty, Life & Health, Series 6, 63 and Georgia Variable Insurance licenses. In 2010, I started my agency in Kennesaw, GA and moved the business to Woodstock about 2022.
The journey has been fulfilling as I have helped educate hundreds of people about the risks life poses and how to protect themselves from financial hardship. It is a “calling.”
